History

In business since 1988 Mind Magic Productions is a professional project studio dedicated to providing a high quality product at an affordable price. The owner and primary engineer of Mind Magic is John Chocianowski. John is an engineer, musician, writer and producer. With 20 plus years of experience on both sides of the glass he can bring a wealth of experience and insight to your project.

John was born in the Upstate New York town of Poughkeepsie. One of 3 brothers he’s always had an interest in recording. From his first Norelco cassette recorder at the age of 7, to a used Sony TC-260 reel to reel, his dad bought him at age 10, the seed was planted for the pursuit of high quality recording. All through school he recorded band concerts and himself when he snuck on his brothers Teac 3340 4-track. He then purchased his first piece of professional recording gear in 1983, a Tascam 38 ½ inch 8-track. That’s when the odyssey of Mind Magic Productions began.

John started in his mom’s basement, a small facility which saw many local bands come and go. He moved the studio in 1991 to a friend’s professionally designed space in the City of Poughkeepsie. Mind Magic operated there with hundreds of customers until early 2000. The building was to be torn down to make room for a parking lot. John decided to move the studio to his residence and has operated there ever since.

With 20 plus years in the business Mind Magic has recorded an incredible variety of styles. From the New York String Quartet for a PBS documentary to drumming great Steve Gadd for a Hudson Music instructional video, from Classical to Hardcore Rock they’ve recorded most every style. One thing stays constant, the pursuit of recording excellence in an artist friendly comfortable environment at an affordable price.

John is a 1988 graduate of Full Sail’s Advanced Recording and Engineering program. He is also a member of AES. When not recording he enjoys very low tech hobbies such as watching the fish in his pond.
